Beatles video game is coming
"Every member of the Apple team -- Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison and Yoko Ono Lennon have been part of the conversation, have seen demonstrations of the game, understand how it's going to roll out, what you're going to see on your screen, how the interactivity and the immersive experience will unfold and they will be involved along every step of the way creatively and musically, with Giles Martin [son of Beatles producer George Martin]," said Apple Corps' Jones. "They'll be involved in the design and the implementation of the design."

"Fence Off" your wireless access area
What if you could "wall off" an area of Wi-Fi, where anyone outside a set perimeter couldn't access your signal? Check out the video:

Attention! And then some $$ to go with it, please
We're drowning in choices - music, tv channels, web sites. Why does so little truly excite us? And why are so few people making any real money from all that's being put forth?
I think Kevin Kelly is really on top of it, with so many nuggets here:
Where ever attention flows, money will follow.
Maintain an incoming flow of attention and money will follow.
...the fact that something does work or is helpful is no longer sufficient for success. Good, useful stuff is now the minimum standard. I might even make the argument that great stuff is the minimum.
Now anything that lasts has to also maintain our attention.
Getting a quick blitz of attention is a no-brainer. The challenge is maintaining a flow of attention in an environment where you are surrounded by millions of similar things that are good and useful.
The problem for a band is not being "discovered" but remaining interesting.
Time (does) not equal attention. I spend a lot of time in my car but I don’t give it much attention..
- all from Kevin Kelly
and
The challenge for everyone is that we are getting better and better at creating “interesting stuff” but there is a finite supply of attention. Our dynamic range of “interesting” is lessening, as everything in the technium is more perfectly designed to grab attention.- from Stan James (www.wanderingstan.com) in the comments
Again, here's the piece.

God bless the Guitar Man, the great Jerry Reed, who passed away today at age 71.
"Amos Moses" was one of my FAVORITE songs on Top 40 radio growing up. "...knocked him in the head with a stone." BOMP. Classic.

Boxes. Lots and lots of boxes. A fascinating video look inside the mind of director Stanley Kubrick.
Side note: I smiled that in the film one of the fan letters to Kubrick was noted to have been from Sequim, WA (one of my favorite places in the Pacific NW).
And - quite a lot on Kubrick in his imdb.com bio.

In-car Wi-Fi. It's here.
Well that didn't take long.
Information Week says: "will deliver download speeds from 400 to 800 Kbps and average upload speeds of 400 Kbps."
Combining this with the voice recognition features of Microsoft's Sync is when I think it's all going to get very interesting.

Nintendo has another HUGE month
Nintendo on the hardware side:
"...the company has once again destroyed the competition. This is the fourth consecutive month that the Wii and DS have captured the top two hardware sales spots, and they have an iron grip on their locations. The Nintendo Wii sold 675,100 units in May, while the Nintendo DS has sold 452,600. To put that in perspective, the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, and Xbox 360 sold 577,600 units combined."

Wow, so compelling. We'll pay attention when something is done this well:
The Nintendo Channel launches on the Wii
Poof! Out of nowhere it's the Nintendo Channel. I downloaded it this morning. The menus are slick and the videos load fast.
GTA 4 scores $ Half-BILLION (!) first week sales
Just flat-out HUGE numbers. Even Captain Jack's 3rd movie got whacked by Niko Bellic:
"Grand Theft Auto IV" has surged past "Halo 3" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" to set the record for the biggest opening week of any entertainment product. - Variety
But Mario Kart Wii rules at our house, waiting for Nintendo's big numbers to shine too.

Video Game Sales again up BIG, Nintendo upping Wii production
"Nintendo announced late last week that it would increase its monthly production of Wii video game consoles to 2.4 million, from 1.8 million."
Lots of strong video game industry numbers on the eve of GTA IV:
Software sales were up 63 percent in March compared with March 2007, according to NPD Group, which tracks sales. Equipment sales were up 46 percent over the same period.
Digital Sales now 23% of US Music Sales
So it's good news on the digital side, more tough numbers on the CD-sales side.

How People Are Getting Their Music
The slice of dark blue (CDs) in the chart is shrinking fast. A good overview of what's up in the fast-changing music market. In this survey paid downloads are growing, but here's the tough nugget for record companies:

Change a single note in a recorded CHORD (!) - and much more
Wow, the creative musical possibilities shown here in Melodyne's new software are limitless. Maybe even a little scary.
Note: I first thought the narrator in the video was saying "meaty," but it's how he pronounces "Midi."
And much like how digital image editing has challenged us in how we look at any kind of visual, this shows that going forward you'll never really be able to know what the original source of an audio recording was.

iTunes claims to be the #1 US Music Seller
It only took about 4 years for Apple to become the biggest music seller in the US.
The news came on the same day as the announcement of 3 of the 4 big music companies making a deal with MySpace.
Jay-Z goes with Live Nation for Mega $$
Will Live Nation's signing of Jay-Z give the "partner with the promoter, not the label" idea a whole lot more traction? Besides the big up-front money (about $80 Mill!), it takes the pressure off of Jay-Z for a radio hit:
“In a way I want to operate like an indie band,” he said. “Play the music on tour instead of relying on radio. Hopefully we’ll get some hits out of there and radio will pick it up, but we won’t make it with that in mind.”

The path to small success with 1,000 "True Fans"
What if you could find and bond with 1,000 "true fans" who would spend $100 a year on your works? Interesting look at how an artist or content creator might not have to become a mass-appeal star to make a living. From Kevin Kelly's blog (thanks to the9513.com for bringing it to my attention).

Taylor Swift - online and clued in
"I spend so much time on MySpace. It's the best way to figure out what your fans and what your friends and these people that helped you get where you are, what they're going through and what they want to hear from you, what they're liking, what they're not. My MySpace is something that I made. The background that you see on there, I went to a Web site and copied the code and copy-and-pasted my "about me" section. I upload all the pictures, I check the comments, I am in charge of everything on that page."
Are you experienced? If so, does that mean you're good?
This story from Time magazine is as inspirational as anything I've seen on why we can never coast. The piece talks about how experience alone doesn't make someone good at something:
"...rather than mere experience or even raw talent, it is dedicated, slogging, generally solitary exertion — repeatedly practicing the most difficult physical tasks for an athlete, repeatedly performing new and highly intricate computations for a mathematician — that leads to first-rate performance. And it should never get easier; if it does, you are coasting, not improving."
Guess that means I should fire up Brain Age on the DS again (the activity in the the first edition of the game where you quickly count people running in and out of a house makes my head hurt just thinking about it).
So there it is - the "secret" to success. Work on the hard stuff.

Now a portable version of Guitar Hero for DS

Super Smash Brothers debuts with a big punch
Nintendo's Super Smash Brothers Brawl for the Wii has broken Nintendo sales records and pulled in over over $50 Million in first-week sales: "The Puget Sound Business Journal reported that the game has had an overall sales record if 1.4 million units, with 874,000 sold on March 9."

Will The Beatles songs finally be coming to iTunes? Sure sounds like things are moving along for an announcement this year. UPDATE 3/11/08: Or... maybe NOT.

Business push e-mail coming in the next iPhone update
On my recent business trip to Nashville I ran in to plenty of iPhone users, and every one of them LOVED their iPhone. The only real complaint I heard was the inability to use push e-mail from their company, like BlackBerry users can. Sounds like the upcoming June iPhone 2.0 update will fix that.

Live video coming to YouTube in 2008?
Sure sounds like it from this scoop from Sarah Meyers as reported by CNET's tech news blog. Don't you think live video will explode then?
There are sites where you can do live streaming video now, but none with the reach and brand name of YouTube.
Seems like a real game changer. And will the Internet be able to take the surge in bandwidth demand?
Guitar Hero 3 comes to AT&T Phones
First it was Verizon, and now CNET reports that AT&T phone customers will be able to play Guitar Hero 3 on their phones. Let's just not hear of someone trying to drive while trying to keep up with the insanely fast GH3 version of "Devil Went To Georgia," 'keh!?
Are digital music sales already 40% of revenue at some majors?
Digital Music News reports that at the recent Digital Music Forum in New York, some surprisingly high digital sales numbers were revealed.
Disney Games coming with "Ultimate Band" for Wii, DS
Another entry is coming in the video game music space, currently dominated by Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Disney Interactive Studios is coming with "Ultimate Band" for the Nintendo Wii and DS. No add-on controllers. "Songs already confirmed for "Ultimate Band" include "Steady as She Goes" by the Raconteurs, the Who's "My Generation" and "Fell in Love With a Girl" by the White Stripes, all of which will be covers."

Amazing - over 1 BILLION cell phones sold in 2007
It's staggering, isn't it? "More than 1.15 billion mobile phones were sold worldwide in 2007, a 16 percent increase from the 990.9 million phones sold in 2006."
A hit drama online doesn't guarantee TV success
“Quarterlife” has been a hit on MySpace. On network TV, not so much. "...the worst performance in the 10 p.m. time slot that NBC has seen in nearly 17 years." Ouch.

From Ars Technica. News from the "Digital Music Forum East" meeting. Point worth pondering: "the next big thing is a dozen things."

Irving Azoff on the Eagles / Wal-Mart relationship
And the power of touring in this NY Post article.
Quote from Eagles manager Irving Azoff: "I recently looked to see how much The Eagles have been paid in royalties from all their downloads at iTunes. The Eagles are one of the two or three best selling catalogs in the business. And we figured out that [total iTunes royalties] equaled about 45 minutes of one concert at any city in the world." (Saw this in the Lefsetz letter)
iTunes now #2 in Music Sales
iTunes now trails only Wal-Mart in music sales. The line from that jumped out at me was "...48 percent of U.S. teenagers didn't buy any CDs during the year, up from 38 percent in the year before."
Another look at the above story from the LA Times here, that notes: "The number of people buying music legally from online music stores jumped 21% to 29 million last year from 24 million in 2006..." but that "The increase in legal online sales was driven by people 36 to 50."

Excuse me, one of my 17 types of media is beeping...
Wow, the people who've agreed to take part in this all-day media use study must be confident that they don't have anything to hide, hmm? And check this: the researchers will monitor "the use of 17 different media as the people use them alone and in multiple combinations." (!)
Do you even come close to that? I gather that's counting multiple media on one device, don't you think? On your PC alone you could do e-mail, chat, browse the web, download songs and videos, etc... so that be five right there? Would a DVR and live TV count as 2 different media?
A wary view of the project here.
I've set up a news alert to monitor what happens as results get reported later this year.
HBO putting some full episodes on YouTube
I like seeing HBO join this trend (CBS had an episodes online announcement last week).
I've been wanting to see some of "In Treatment," and HBO's posted (as of this writing) 4 full episodes online.
Thanks for the hits, Phil Gernhard
I've met record execs and artists who worked with him, but I never got to meet Phil Gernhard. I've sure loved some of the songs he helped bring to the world, though. In particular "Spiders & Snakes," one of my favorite 70's hits ever.
What a parade of hits: "Gernhard's legacy included producing Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs hit "Stay," Dion's "Abraham Martin and John," Lobo's "Me and You and a Dog Named Boo," Jim Stafford's "Spiders And Snakes" and the Bellamy Brothers' "Let Your Love Flow." He also produced and composed "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron" by the Royal Guardsmen."
He was also involved in the careers of many contemporary country artists.
Thanks for the music, Phil.
Michael Wolff on Hollywood in a YouTube world
From Vanity Fair. "Hollywood, which has been the center of the culture, the coolest place, the ruler of the Zeitgeist, is out of it." (Thanks KVD).
Timing is everything - the article came out right before the 2008 Academy Awards show had the lowest Oscar ratings ever.
Speaking Tips from an M.I.T. Professor
Looks like a lot of great speaking info in these online videos. Check out Prof. Patrick Winston's "Big 4" if you want a quick handy lesson on how present your ideas more effectively. I like his references to probability and psychology in explaining the need for cycling, repeating your point three times to insure that your audience has the chance to "get it." Blu-Ray won, but you might want to grab an HD-DVD on the cheap...
So here's a reason to buy an HD-DVD player at a firesale price: "HD DVD players also make great upscaling DVD players" for your old non-HD disks.
